Do you have a LinkedIn profile that you feel it is not used to its optimal capacity? Do you wonder how to make it better for your business or organization?
LinkedIn is the #1 business social network and it can be incredibly useful when you know how to take advantage of its features.
Not so long ago, LinkedIn was mainly used to showcase your resumé online and all you needed to do was to update it once in a while.
It is not the case anymore. In order for you and your business to stand out on LinkedIn, there is a number of tasks to accomplish to optimize your profile.
Melonie Dodaro is referred as “Canada’s #1 LinkedIn Expert” and she regularly shares useful tips on how to increase your LinkedIn profile’s visibility.
I put together a list of steps based on her experience and mine to provide you with a clear idea of what you can do to optimize your LinkedIn profile.
Let’s look at these steps.
Use your name
It is tempting to use your business or organization name instead of your own given LinkedIn is a professional social network, but use your personal full name. You can include your business name in the headline and experience sections.
Have a professional profile picture
It is recommended to use a professional and quality headshot. Connections and future ones want to put a face on your name.
Make your headline interesting
In order to be interesting and show up in Google search results, the headline under your name should be catchy and have keywords. Melanie Dorado’s headline is a good example.
Customize your profile URL
LinkedIn gives you the option to customize your profile URL and it is free. It can be done in the editing section.
Update your status regularly
Update your status daily or a few times weekly. It increases your credibility and visibility while adding value to your network. You can share your latest blog post, a presentation, inspiration quotes or anything you think it is worth sharing. These updates must remain professional.
Provide all relevant information
This refers to your contact information, social media networks you want to share with your connections, business or organization website, blog, etc. Make sure to fill in all the sections on your profile: Summary, Experience, Projects, Volunteer work, Causes you care about, etc.
Add visual content
Do you know that you can add visual content to your profile with the Professional Portfolio feature? It allows you to add photos, videos, links to your articles with images, screenshots, infographics and SlideShare presentations. This feature is available for the Summary, Experience and Education sections on your LinkedIn profile.
Use Pulse to self-publish
Would you like to share your articles or blog posts on LinkedIn with your target audiences and potential future connections? Pulse is a free self-publishing platform on LinkedIn and it allows you to reach a wide audience in your area of work. Give it a try!
The more connections you have the better. It is recommended to have 500 connections or more. However, it is more important to connect with relevant people. When sending a connection request, it is important to personalize your message instead of using the default one provided by LinkedIn.
Personalize recommendation requests
To stand out, you should have at least 10 recommendations. Quality recommendations matter over the number. When requesting recommendations to your connections, make sure to personalize your message.
Are these steps helpful to you? I hope so! I look forward to any comments or insights you might have.
